Meet Martha Lobulu
An empowered woman taking control of her own future
Martha Lobulu is a 39-year-old Maasai woman living in remote and rural Tanzania in the Monduli District, far off the electrical grid, in an area facing long-term drought and deforestation. She serves as an example of an empowered woman of the Maasai Stoves & Solar Project.
Martha completed primary school and was married at age 15. She is now a recognized leader, as head of the Maasai Stoves & Solar Women’s Installation Team of Esilalei village.
She was one of three women elected by colleagues to travel to western Uganda to participate in bringing the Project to the Batwa people. She chairs the Esilalei Women’s Association of the CCM, making her one of the few women representing Tanzania’s majority party in her village.
As an empowered woman, Martha serves as an inspiration to other Maasai women, as she has taken control of her own future while leading her family, community, and surrounding villages towards clear homes and healthier lives. Her husband has been important in her development as a leader by encouraging and supporting his wife’s role in the community.
